When you are married and living together as of December 31 of any year you must file either jointly or married filing separately.

You should have your return prepared by a tax lawyer of tax accountant.

I hope this helps!

Subject:  tax preparer error

The accountant at a local tax service in Portland, Oregon made an error on my 2005 1040 form, despite having the necessary info in my file. He admitted that he entered the info into the computer, but forgot to check the appropriate box that would include an amount from a 1099 into my total earnings. Now the IRS  has found the discrepancy and is requesting that I pay $2000 plus interest for the error. Do I have any legal recourse as far as this matter is concerned? That is, is the preparer liable for any portion of this costly mistake?

I understand your concern, but the real cost to you is negligible. The tax is what you would have owed. The only thing you have lost is the interest. Since you had the use of the money, your real lost is not much (less than $100) and certainly not worth pursuing. Minor mistakes in tax preparation are very common. If you otherwise like this preparer's work, why not ask for a discount on this year's return preparation cost?

I hope this helps!

If your child was Born on December 31, 2006 or anytime in 2006, you can claim the child for the entire year.

I hope this helps!

Your tax status is determined on December 31 of the tax year. Since you were married on December 31, you are considered married for the whole year. You must file as either married filing separately or jointly.

I hope this helps!

Subject:  Department of Treasury

A gentleman and woman stopped by my mother's house with a Treasury badge asking for me. They stated they wanted to meet me in person to ask me questions about a business I used to work at over 2 years ago for a period of about 3 weeks. This makes no sense and I am not sure if I should meet with them or not. I was advised to ask for legal advice as to not incriminated myself  by answering their questions. What should I do?

"If you see double, you're in trouble!" Two people from the IRS usually means a criminal investigation. Say NOTHING to them. IMMEDIATELY call a tax lawyer to review the matter. DO NOT DELAY!
